About Sablier Finance
Sablier Finance is an on-chain token streaming protocol that enables real-time, continuous transfer of crypto assets. Its core business allows users to deposit tokens into smart contracts and have them released linearly to recipients on a per-second basis, supporting scenarios such as vesting schedules, airdrops, payroll, and grants. The protocol operates on 30+ EVM chains and Solana, with over 345,000 unique Ethereum addresses having processed 837,000 transactions.
The core competitive advantage lies in its non-custodial, permissionless smart contracts. Users retain full control of funds at all times, and the protocol does not hold any assets. Its ERC-1620 standard, proposed by the founder, provides a foundational framework for token streaming. This design addresses the market pain point of trust and transparency in traditional one-time transfers or locked token distributions, reducing counterparty risk and enabling automated, verifiable fund release.
In the past six months (2026-03-02 to 2026-09-02), Sablier announced on July 13, 2026 that it would halt active development and enter maintenance mode until June 2028. The company cited a difficult Q1 with declining usage and revenue, AI-assisted coding lowering technical barriers, and market focus shifting toward speculative trading. The official interface no longer accepts new streams with end dates beyond June 2028 or open-ended payment streams. However, existing streams, vesting plans, and airdrop claims continue to operate on-chain without impact. The core EVM smart contracts were open-sourced ahead of schedule, transitioning from BUSL to GPL license, allowing community forking. The Solana application was also scaled down to a claim-only interface. No security incidents have occurred during the protocol's operation.
Sablier Finance is a pioneer in crypto asset streaming payments. In June 2019, the founder launched a proof-of-concept, and in December of the same year, together with a co-founder, released the first version of the protocol, attracting Vitalik's attention and reaching about $100k in early TVL. In the summer of 2020, it was acquired by Hifi Finance; over the next two years, the protocol grew organically without marketing, peaking at $1.5B TVL in 2021.
In early 2022, it spun off from Hifi to establish Sablier Labs, focusing on V2, which launched that summer. In July 2026, Sablier Labs announced it would stop commercial operations and enter maintenance mode until June 2028, while moving core contracts from BUSL to GPL ahead of schedule, fully open-sourcing them and ensuring the protocol runs independently of the company. These milestones trace a journey from innovation, acquisition, independence, peak growth, to becoming a public good.
Sablier Labs announced maintenance mode on July 13, 2026, halting active development while keeping existing streams, vesting plans, and airdrops operational through June 2028. Earlier in Q1 2026, the protocol shipped Variable Claim Airdrops (VCAs) and Lockup v4.0 with granularity and price-gated unlocks. However, due to market downturn and AI-assisted coding reducing demand, the team concluded there is no venture-scale business in onchain token distribution. Contracts were relicensed from BUSL 1.1 to GPL immediately, enabling community forking. No further roadmap; interface stewardship will transition to the community before June 2028.
