About Roll
Roll was one of the earliest social token protocols, launched on Ethereum in 2019, letting creators mint fixed-supply personal ERC-20 tokens: 10 million per token, with 2 million at genesis and the rest vesting monthly over three years, secondary liquidity from Uniswap v1 integration in 2019, and token-gated communities popularized together with Collab.Land. Custodial wallets spared supporters key management, while the platform acted as issuer, wallet operator and de facto token registry at once.
On March 14, 2021 a hot-wallet private key compromise let an attacker drain tokens from more than 400 creators and dump them on Uniswap for about 3,000 ETH (roughly 5.7 million USD), with WHALE, FWB and related tokens falling 50% to 100% that day; concentrating hundreds of community treasuries behind one set of keys was a single point of failure. The custodial app was announced for shutdown in April 2025 and fully closed on May 26, 2025, while non-custodial products - staking, memberships and Roll Fun - remain, with contracts and tokens remaining onchain.
