About Primitives
Primitives is a creator toolkit on Solana that puts NFTs and social graphs on chain cheaply using state compression: images and metadata are written as Merkle trees, minting costs fall close to a normal transfer, and users can sign up with a phone number to get a non-custodial wallet before deciding to take over the keys. It ran limited gem drops, gacha experiments and a social graph, trying to let creators issue and distribute without learning wallet mechanics. It targets the high barrier to NFTs for mainstream creators and social graphs locked inside platforms.
The technical shortcut externalises cost: compressed NFT data availability depends on indexers, and if indexing stops the assets may not display in common wallets. In 2026 the project made no public updates, the website domain no longer resolves, social accounts are dormant, documentation was last touched two years ago. Contracts may still be callable, but surrounding services and support cannot be relied on.
Primitives was founded by David "DJ" Gabeau, a former Snapchat engineer, as a Solana-based digital art market. In January 2022, it completed a $4 million seed round led by Redpoint Ventures, followed by a $2 million seed extension in August. A closed beta launched in Spring 2022 saw users mint over 150,000 artworks across 124 countries.
In March 2024, Primitives announced the Primitives Protocol, an open, permissionless social graph infrastructure layer on Solana that stores social connections on-chain using compressed NFTs (Merkle trees), readable and writable by any application. An accompanying SDK was released, with 15+ external teams registering interest at launch.
In August 2024, the platform paused art trading to address technical issues, then introduced Lootboxes in November to sustain community participation. The team established Tapestry as a dedicated entity to develop the protocol independently, raising a $5.75 million Series A in January 2025 co-led by USV and Fabric Ventures, bringing cumulative funding to $12.5 million. Tapestry plans to expand the protocol to Aptos, Monad, and Berachain, positioning primitives.xyz as the first application built on this shared infrastructure.
No reliable major developments were identified for Primitives between 2026-03-12 and 2026-09-12. The project's official channels and available news do not disclose a clear roadmap for this period, and no substantive protocol upgrades, funding rounds, or strategic pivots were confirmed. If the project has ceased operations or paused development, no official announcement was found.
