About PoolTogether
PoolTogether is a decentralized, non-custodial lottery protocol built on Ethereum. Its core mechanism is "lossless lottery": users deposit assets like USDC or DAI into a prize pool, and the yield generated from lending those assets on DeFi platforms is pooled together and randomly awarded to winners. The principal of every depositor remains safe and can be withdrawn at any time.
Its core competitiveness lies in this lossless design, which transforms traditional gambling into a savings game. Users sacrifice only potential interest for a chance to win, rather than risking their principal. The protocol's V5 version is designed as a "hyperstructure"—an immutable, autonomous smart contract that anyone can build upon, with no admin keys and no ability to be shut down. This composability allows other protocols and developers to integrate prize savings into their own products.
The market pain point it addresses is the negative-sum nature of traditional lotteries, where most participants lose their money. PoolTogether instead offers a positive-sum or at least zero-sum experience: no one loses principal, and the "cost" of participation is merely the opportunity cost of the interest that could have been earned elsewhere.
In the past six months (March to September 2026), the protocol has continued to operate its V5 deployment across multiple EVM chains. Development activity has focused on improving the claimer mechanism and expanding integrations with new yield sources. The community has remained active in governance discussions, particularly around optimizing prize distribution frequency and vault parameters. However, the protocol's native token POOL has continued to trade at very low levels, reflecting the broader bear market and the token's limited utility beyond governance. No major security incidents or protocol failures were reported during this period, though the overall TVL remains modest compared to the protocol's peak in previous years. A notable legal precedent from 2023, where a US federal court dismissed a lawsuit against the protocol for lack of standing, continues to provide some regulatory clarity, though the broader legal landscape for DeFi remains uncertain.
PoolTogether, launched in 2019, pioneered no-loss lottery savings in DeFi. In February 2020, it surpassed 2,000 users and 1 million Dai, marking early traction. April 2020 saw the release of pods, collaborative no-loss savings tools that allowed users to pool tickets and share prizes proportionally. A significant milestone came in February 2021 with the launch of the POOL token, airdropped to over 17,000 unique wallets, initiating decentralized governance. The V5 iteration, deployed on Optimism, transformed the protocol into a hyperstructure: fully autonomous, immutable, and permissionless, enabling anyone to create prize pools or integrate via ERC-4626 vaults. These steps represent a shift from a simple lottery to an open, composable savings layer, cementing its long-term impact.
Leighton Cusack (Co-founder) and Brendan Asselstine (Co-founder & CTO) lead PoolTogether. Leighton previously founded Kindred, a nonprofit donation platform, and entered crypto in 2018. Brendan is a skilled developer who built the initial protocol prototype. Both continue to drive the project's decentralized vision.
