About Penumbra
Penumbra is a privacy-focused layer-1 network and decentralised exchange in the Cosmos ecosystem where transactions are shielded by default. Moving any asset that supports the inter-blockchain communication protocol into the network shields it, and moving it out unshields it, so the chain works as a shielded pool shared across chains; zero-knowledge proofs are generated locally on the user's own light node, and information is visible only to the user and chosen recipients.
Trading runs through ZSwap, which uses sealed-bid batch auctions combined with concentrated liquidity, disclosing only the net flow of each asset within a block, which removes front-running, while liquidity positions are opened anonymously. Staking is rebuilt for privacy: delegation is represented by transferable delegation tokens whose value follows an epoch-varying exchange rate, and each validator's total delegation stays public so its behaviour can be checked. Governance supports anonymous proposals and encrypted voting, with tallies decrypted only per epoch.
On January 21, 2026, Odaily reported in a Cosmos ecosystem retrospective that the privacy chain Penumbra had shut down completely with the team exiting, and that although community validators barely keep the chain running it is largely ignored; Bitget, KuCoin and Gate.io later republished the report. As of October 2026, penumbra.zone remains accessible, with about $3.77 million in DEX volume over the past 30 days, six IBC-connected chains, around 100,000 wallets, UM trading near $0.01 for a market cap of roughly $5 million, and staking yields near 2.7%.
Penumbra will keep upgrade cadence through community governance after the development company exited, continue polishing the Veil trading frontend, the Noctis explorer and portfolio tooling, and rely on IBC assets plus the Liquidity Tournament to hold depth.
