About Obscura VPN
Obscura VPN is a commercial virtual private network that delivers verifiable privacy through a two-party relay design: traffic enters Obscura's own ingress, which sees only the user's address, then exits through a partner's separate egress, which sees only the destination, with end-to-end encryption and protocol obfuscation against deep packet inspection, an open-source client, no email requirement and crypto payment.
It targets providers that see both who the user is and where they go, where no-logs claims rest on promises and censoring networks block protocols, splitting identity from egress across two organisations that share no data. An Android build reached app stores and an open distribution channel on 19 May 2026, and a Windows build followed on 25 August. It covers five desktop and mobile platforms with a smaller node footprint than large commercial providers.
Obscura VPN shipped its Linux client in late September 2026, completing platform coverage after macOS, iOS, Android and Windows; its two-hop architecture (Obscura relays the entry, Mullvad runs the exit) is designed so no single party sees both the user's IP and browsing destination.
On September 11 Obscura VPN launched the Circle of Trust program, with open-source end-to-end encrypted cloud storage Ente Photos as the first member, and supports anonymous payments via Bitcoin Lightning and Monero.
Obscura VPN's forward plan expands relay and exit node locations, strengthens QUIC-based censorship evasion, and builds a coalition of privacy-first apps.
Carl Dong — Founder, self-styled "head-janitor"; a former top-five Bitcoin Core contributor with a long record in reproducible builds and privacy infrastructure; founded Sovereign Engineering in 2024 and launched Obscura VPN in February 2025, built on a two-party relay with Mullvad running the exit hop.
