About Nouns
Nouns is a generative art collective built on Ethereum, producing one unique pixel-art 'Noun' NFT every 24 hours via an on-chain auction. All proceeds go directly to the community treasury, which is governed by Noun holders through a fork of Compound's governance protocol, where one Noun equals one vote.
Its core strength lies in a headless brand model: all artwork and code are released under CC0, meaning anyone can freely use, remix, or build upon them without permission. This open approach has spawned a wide ecosystem of community-led projects, from games and merchandise to experimental media, all while maintaining a shared visual identity.
Nouns addresses a common pain point in NFT communities: the lack of sustainable funding and inclusive participation. Instead of a fixed supply or founder-controlled roadmap, the daily auction creates a perpetual treasury, and any holder can propose ideas for funding, turning the project into a decentralized engine for public goods and creative ventures.
Over the past six months (March to September 2026), Nouns has continued to evolve through community governance. Notable developments include the launch of 'Noun City', a collaborative storytelling platform where holders can create and participate in narrative experiences, and the formal establishment of a DUNA (Decentralized Unincorporated Nonprofit Association) in Wyoming, providing legal clarity for the DAO's operations. The community has also been exploring ways to refine the proposal veto mechanism, aiming to balance decentralization with long-term sustainability.
One significant challenge during this period was a governance debate over the use of treasury funds for a high-profile marketing campaign, which sparked discussions about the DAO's priorities and led to a revised proposal with more transparent metrics. This reflects the ongoing, self-correcting nature of the community's decision-making process.
Over the past six months, Nouns DAO has made key moves in asset efficiency, legal structure, and content ecosystem:
- Auction mechanism change: Prop 968 passed, Auction House V4 transfers no-bid Nouns to the DAO treasury instead of burning them (). Storage/ABI unchanged, proxy-upgradeable; keeps options to re-auction or treasury-burn later.
- Idle asset utilization: with 613 treasury Nouns mostly earning nothing, Prop 992 proposes sending 24 into FWA, an on-chain gacha, each backed by ~1.28 ETH, with draw fees flowing to the treasury ().
- Legal/tax exploration: as a Wyoming DUNA, the DAO commissioned a study on a compliant sister 501(c)(3) to enable tax-advantaged donations supporting governance ().
- Community content layer: Prop 976 approved $30k to build Noun City, an AI-assisted collaborative storytelling platform where holders can open Spaces and earn fees, creating a daily narrative layer and sustainable revenue ().
Future focus: activate dormant treasury assets, establish a charitable structure, and grow a sustainable content economy.
Nouns has ten co-founders (Nounders), but only Caleb Tebbe has publicly reliable biographical information.
Caleb Tebbe is a co-founder of Nouns DAO and currently serves as Chief Technology Officer at Blockchain Capital. He joined in September 2022, leading technical due diligence, research, and portfolio engineering teams. Previously, he was SVP of Product and Engineering at Core Scientific, the largest Bitcoin miner in North America; co-founded Rio (acquired by EigenLayer) and served as Director of Engineering; co-founded RADAR (acquired) as CTO, building one of the first decentralized exchanges; and was an early Data Science Engineer at Coinbase. He has been active in the Ethereum ecosystem since 2017, contributing to DeFi, NFTs, and DAOs. He holds a B.S. and M.C.S. in Computer Science from Colorado State University.
