About Notional

Notional is a decentralized lending protocol focused on fixed-rate, fixed-term borrowing and lending. Its core mechanism uses fCash, an ERC-1155 token that acts like a zero-coupon bond, representing a claim on a specific amount of an asset at a future date. Users can buy fCash at a discount to earn a fixed return, or sell it to lock in a fixed borrowing cost. The protocol also offers nTokens for liquidity provision and leveraged vaults for executing DeFi strategies.

The main pain point Notional addresses is interest rate uncertainty in DeFi. Floating-rate protocols like Aave or Compound leave borrowers exposed to rising costs and lenders to falling yields. By enabling fixed rates, Notional provides predictability for users who need stable cash flows, such as DAOs managing treasuries or businesses with predictable repayment schedules. Its competitive edge lies in this specialization, offering a more traditional finance-like experience on-chain.

Over the past six months (February to August 2026), Notional has continued to operate its V3 version, which introduced cross-margin vaults and improved capital efficiency. However, the protocol faced a significant challenge in late 2023 when a Balancer pool vulnerability led to bad debts, forcing the team to pause V3 and later migrate affected positions to Aave. While this incident was more than two years ago, it remains a notable part of the protocol's history. Recent development updates have been limited, with no major new features announced during this period, according to available public information.
