About Notional Finance
Notional Finance is a decentralized lending protocol on Ethereum that focuses on fixed-rate, fixed-term borrowing and lending. Its core mechanism uses fCash tokens, which represent future cash flows, allowing users to lock in interest rates for specific periods. The protocol operates through an on-chain AMM that prices fCash based on supply and demand, enabling lenders to buy fCash at a discount and redeem it at face value upon maturity, while borrowers can mint and sell fCash to receive underlying assets. This design addresses a key pain point in DeFi: floating-rate volatility. Traditional DeFi lending platforms like Aave or Compound offer variable rates that can shift unpredictably, making it difficult for users to plan finances. Notional solves this by providing certainty—lenders know their exact yield upfront, and borrowers know their exact cost, similar to traditional fixed-income markets. Its competitive edge lies in its specialized infrastructure: a purpose-built AMM for interest rate markets, efficient capital utilization through leveraged positions, and a transparent liquidation mechanism with tiered discounts for different collateral types. The protocol also has a governance token, NOTE, which can be staked for protocol insurance and fee sharing. Over the past six months (March to September 2026), Notional has continued to operate its V2 protocol and has been developing V3, which introduces isolated risk markets and smart accounts for more flexible collateral management. However, the project has faced challenges: total value locked (TVL) has remained relatively modest compared to major lending platforms, and user growth has been slow. Additionally, in 2025, the team had to address a smart contract bug discovered during an audit, which was fixed without loss of funds. While the fixed-rate lending niche is still nascent, Notional remains one of the few protocols dedicated to this use case, with a functional product and a clear focus on rate certainty.
