About Neynar
Neynar is a developer platform for the Farcaster protocol, providing hosted hubs, REST APIs, SDKs, and tools that let builders read and write social data (users, casts, follows) without running their own infrastructure. Its core value is turning the heavy DevOps work of running Farcaster nodes into simple paid API calls, making it the de facto infrastructure layer for most Farcaster apps and even data analytics platforms.
Its competitive moat lies in being the default data gateway for the ecosystem: many applications and third-party analytics rely on Neynar's APIs, which gives it deep integration and switching costs. The pain point it solves is the high technical barrier and operational cost of building on a decentralized protocol—developers can focus on products instead of managing nodes, indexing, and real-time event streams.
In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-31), Neynar acquired the Farcaster protocol, its official client, and Clanker, transitioning from infrastructure provider to protocol operator. It cut infrastructure costs by 80% and began decentralizing validator operations. However, the broader ecosystem faced challenges: Farcaster saw significant revenue decline and user churn in late 2025, and the protocol's consumer growth remains sluggish despite the wallet-first pivot.
Founded in 2021 by Coinbase alumni Rishav Mukherji and Manan Patel, Neynar initially built applications on Farcaster before pivoting into a developer platform providing hosted hubs, REST APIs, and account infrastructure.
In May 2024, Neynar completed an $11 million Series A led by Haun Ventures, with participation from USV, a16z CSX, and Coinbase Ventures. Notably, Farcaster founders Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan were early backers, cementing the symbiotic relationship between the two companies.
The defining milestone came in January 2026, when Neynar acquired Farcaster and Clanker from Merkle Manufactory. This marked a transition from infrastructure provider to protocol owner, consolidating the protocol layer, application layer, and infrastructure under one roof. The acquisition followed Farcaster's pivot from social-first to wallet-first strategy and its declining revenue, positioning Neynar's B2B SaaS model as the sustainable economic foundation for the ecosystem.
