About Meter.io
Meter is an EVM-compatible Ethereum sidechain started in 2018, with a dual-token structure: MTR pays gas while MTRG is used for staking and governance. The consensus is a hybrid design, with Meter PoW, a memoryless proof-of-work, responsible for block production and HotStuff Byzantine fault tolerance responsible for finality, balancing decentralization with sub-second confirmation; on the cross-chain side, the Meter Passport bridge moves assets between Ethereum and Meter. It targets developers who want to move Ethereum applications to a low-fee environment without giving up the Ethereum security model, positioning itself as a decentralized high-performance sidechain that differs from ordinary bridge-based sidechains at the consensus layer.
On September 23, 2026 a block-validation flaw in the Passport bridge was exploited, with roughly 2.3 million US dollars in unbacked MTRG/MTR minted and dumped; the mainnet and bridge were paused immediately, after which the team executed a token swap and migrated to Base, with pre-incident holders exchanging 1:1.
Major setback: On September 23, an attacker exploited a block-validation flaw in the Meter Passport bridge to mint about $2.3M of unbacked MTRG/MTR and dumped them on PancakeSwap. MTRG fell 72%-88% in a day; the mainnet and bridge were paused, and transactions after block 100731417 may not be honored.
Major development: The team executed a token swap based on the 21:14 UTC September 23 snapshot and migrated to Base. Pre-incident holders swapped 1:1 while post-incident buyers swapped 10:1; Gate completed the swap on October 21 and opened withdrawals on October 23.
