About Mercado Bitcoin
Mercado Bitcoin, founded in 2013, has evolved from Brazil's largest crypto exchange into a diversified financial platform. Key long-term milestones include:
In 2020, obtaining CVM authorization to operate as a securities distributor, enabling regulated tokenized asset offerings.
In 2024, launching MBRL, a Brazilian real-pegged stablecoin on the TRON blockchain, expanding its payment and settlement infrastructure.
In 2025, partnering with Polygon Labs to issue over $200 million in tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) in Latin America, positioning MB as a regional leader in RWA tokenization.
These steps reflect a strategic shift from pure trading toward a 'financial super app' model, with blockchain technology operating behind the scenes. The company now targets over $560 million in tokenized credit issuance by end of 2025, with RWAs comprising roughly 20% of assets under custody.
In the past six months, Mercado Bitcoin (MB) achieved several key milestones. In July 2026, Tether invested R$100 million (~$20 million) to accelerate payments infrastructure, tokenized products, credit and lending, on-chain capital markets, and international expansion . In September, MB formed a commercial partnership with Bitso, combining ~15 million Latin American users and ~$130 billion in annual volume to compete with international giants like Binance; Bitso's Brazilian retail clients will migrate to MB's platform, while institutional clients remain with Bitso . MB has issued over R$2 billion in tokenized assets, holds 10+ licenses including a payment institution license, and is seeking a Portugal license to enter the EU .
Official future focus: after Brazil's Central Bank crypto regulation takes effect (Oct 30), MB aims to expand regulated on-chain financial services; prioritize stablecoin payments and cross-border remittances (leveraging Bitso's LatAm payment network), tokenized fixed income/credit, lending, and on-chain capital markets; and pursue M&A in payments/remittances in Argentina and Mexico, continuing internationalization ; .
Co-founders of Mercado Bitcoin include brothers Mauricio Chamati and Gustavo Chamati. Mauricio has served as founder and board member since 2013; Gustavo is also a founder and board member and an Endeavor entrepreneur.
Current core executives:
- Roberto Dagnoni: Chairman & Co-CEO, joined in 2017, led MB's growth into Latin America's largest digital asset platform, brought in investments from SoftBank and others, with US$6B+ in M&A experience.
- Reinaldo Rabelo: Co-founder, now CEO of MB Euro, leading European expansion; formerly Chief Legal, Compliance & Public Affairs Officer at B3.
- Fabrício Tota: VP of Crypto Affairs, joined in 2018; previously led the tokenization division MB Tokens and the OTC business.
