About Matcha

Matcha is a decentralized exchange aggregator from the 0x team that gathers quotes from over a hundred liquidity sources and finds the best execution path, routing large orders to market-maker quotes. It targets liquidity scattered across many pools, manual price comparison, and slippage plus front-running on size.

The mechanism uses smart routing to split orders across pools, supports limit orders, gasless approvals and multiple chains, and never custodies assets; large trades use a request-for-quote path to limit market impact. The experience is polished, but aggregator margins are squeezed by leading wallets and trading bots and it does not own the liquidity, so the moat is thin. In January 2026 a separate product was affected for some users by a third-party integration issue.

Matcha, the DEX aggregator by 0x Labs, launched in 2020 as a consumer-facing frontend for the 0x API, aiming to provide the best swap prices across Ethereum. In 2023, Matcha V2 introduced a redesigned interface and significantly faster quote generation, with the Auto mode beginning development as an MEV-protected execution layer. 2025 marked the public launch of Matcha Auto, featuring MEV-aware execution, roughly two times higher next-block inclusion probability, and integrated sandwich protection, making it the default for most users. By 2026, Matcha had become one of the top three DEX aggregators by volume, indexing over nine million tokens across one hundred plus exchanges on sixteen chains, and serving as the public benchmark for the 0x API that powers swap functionality across most major consumer wallets. These milestones reflect Matcha's evolution from a simple aggregator to a sophisticated trading infrastructure with long-term significance in DeFi.

Matcha and the underlying 0x Protocol iterated heavily in 2026: the Cross-Chain API reached general availability in June (aggregating 12+ bridge partners), the Solana Swap API went live on Solana mainnet, and routing now spans 25+ chains. In April it launched 0x Skills for AI agents, in May the Gasless API added smart-wallet support, and in June an Exact Buy mode arrived.

Future strategy and roadmap: After the cross-chain API went GA, Matcha and the underlying 0x protocol will deepen aggregated cross-chain liquidity across 12-plus bridges and extend Solana Swap API routing to 25-plus chains. With 0x Skills, Gasless API and Exact Buy already shipped for AI agents, it will support Robinhood Chain RFQ and deepen Bitget Wallet API integration. It keeps advancing multi-chain aggregation and AI-agent-native execution to cement its role as DEX-aggregation infrastructure, folding limit orders and automated DCA into a unified trading entry.

0x was founded in 2016 by Will Warren and Bandeali, who shared the CEO title for about six years. Warren studied mechanical engineering at UC San Diego, did materials research at Los Alamos National Laboratory and wrote the 2017 0x whitepaper, long owning protocol strategy and partnerships.

Bandeali came from fixed income trading, where price and slippage are the whole job; he was CTO, designing the matching and settlement contracts, then became co-CEO. In May 2026 Warren stepped down as co-CEO, staying on the board, leaving Bandeali as sole CEO because a two-headed structure had slowed decisions.
