About Gopher
Gopher was formerly known as Masa, a decentralized data network founded in 2021 that began as a marketplace for on-chain identity and data annotation before pivoting to a verifiable data layer for AI. In September 2025 the project rebranded as Gopher and moved to a Layer1 architecture built with the Cosmos SDK, interoperating through IBC, with the native token swapped from MASA to GOAI at a 1:1 ratio and used for validator staking, gas, and data query settlement. Its product line includes the AI trading assistant GoTrader, the automation platform AutoGopher, the on-chain AI-managed vaults GopherVaults, and the reasoning-oriented Cogito Agent Framework.
On the supply side, the team took over Subnet 42 of Bittensor, where miners run scrapers inside Intel SGX trusted execution environments to collect social media and public web content, while validators in the same hardware aggregate each worker's collection volume and weight emissions by demand, with buyers consuming the output through APIs. On March 25, 2026, the Masa entity announced a wind-down of its operations citing market conditions and operational realities; repository activity then stalled, the subnet's on-chain identity field read unset, and a June 2026 chain snapshot showed miner incentives routed to an owner-controlled key.
Recent team changes: Founder and CEO Brendan Playford departed in April 2026. He joined in January 2021 and led Gopher (formerly Masa). Successor information is not disclosed.
