About Kontigo
Kontigo is a stablecoin-focused financial platform serving Latin American users, offering USDC-based wallets, cross-border payments, and a debit card that lets users spend crypto in daily life. Its core value is bypassing traditional banking barriers and currency devaluation: users can hold USDC (pegged to the dollar), send money across borders with low fees, and convert to local currency for spending. The platform targets unbanked or underbanked populations, especially in countries with high inflation or restricted dollar access, solving the pain point of unstable local currencies and expensive remittance channels. In the past six months (Feb-Aug 2026), Kontigo faced significant challenges: it suffered a hacking attack in early 2026, which it claimed to have fully compensated affected users (over 1,000 people, totaling $340,900), but the incident raised security concerns. Additionally, reports emerged that Kontigo was involved in helping funds move in and out of Venezuela's economy, leading major financial institutions like JPMorgan, Stripe, and Bridge to cut ties with the platform, and some users reported PayPal payment channel restrictions. These events triggered internal compliance reviews and highlighted the risks of operating in sanctioned regions. Despite these setbacks, Kontigo continues to emphasize its mission of providing stable, accessible financial services to emerging markets.
