About Infura
Infura is a blockchain developer platform under ConsenSys, offering remote procedure call (RPC) node services, API gateways, IPFS storage, and decentralized infrastructure for Ethereum and Layer 2 networks. Its core business is to let developers quickly access blockchains without running their own nodes, reducing development barriers and operational costs through highly available APIs and scalable architecture.
The market pain point is that running a node requires hardware investment, time-consuming synchronization, complex maintenance, and is prone to service interruption during network congestion. Infura solves these issues with managed nodes, load balancing, failover, and caching, ensuring over 99.9% uptime and providing real-time monitoring and usage analytics.
In the past six months (February to August 2026), Infura continued to expand support for more EVM-compatible chains and optimized API response speed and stability. Its documentation updated guides on dynamic transaction fees, WebSocket connection management, and IPFS pinning services. Additionally, Infura strengthened integration with MetaMask, introducing finer-grained access control and security features to meet the growing demand for Web3 applications. Overall, Infura maintains its leading position in infrastructure while focusing more on developer experience and the resilience of decentralized networks.
Infura's major developments over the past six months center on its decentralized network transition and business contraction. In August 2026, Consensys partnered with Microsoft, Tencent, and 18 other Web2 giants to launch the Decentralized Infrastructure Network (DIN), slated for Q4 launch. DIN will upgrade Infura from a single RPC gateway to a federated multi-provider network with failover capabilities, improving outage recovery and censorship resistance, and will ultimately be governed by a DAO. Officials stated that DIN will progressively achieve economic decentralization and support multi-chain routing, potentially providing a decentralized backend for MetaMask in the future. Meanwhile, Infura officially terminated its IPFS service on August 15, 2026, requiring users to migrate CID data in advance, marking its complete exit from decentralized storage to focus on core blockchain API services. Regarding the roadmap, DIN is currently in the federated phase, with Infura leading routing and vetting, and will later introduce more providers and transition to a permissionless open network. Officials emphasized that DIN's SLA and performance will not be affected by external routing, and partners will be strictly screened to ensure privacy and security.
Michael Wuehler (Co-founder, LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wuehler/, Twitter: https://x.com/wuehler)
Co-founded Infura in 2016, architected the RPC infrastructure that enabled MetaMask to onboard millions of users without node operation. Previously SVP at Bank of America Merrill Lynch (2005-2016). MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Founded Ethereum NYC meetup (7,500+ members).
Infura's co-founder E.G. Galano departed in May 2026, ending a decade-long tenure since May 2016. His exit marks a significant leadership change for the blockchain API and developer tools provider, as he was one of the earliest architects of the platform's infrastructure and growth.
