About Hourglass

Hourglass is a marketplace for Time-Bound Tokens (TBTs), built on the concept of tokenizing locked assets. Users can deposit LP tokens into vaults with specific maturity dates and receive TBTs representing their locked positions. These TBTs can then be traded on Hourglass's order book, allowing users to exit early without waiting for the lock-up period to end.

The core value proposition is solving the liquidity problem of locked assets in DeFi. Instead of being forced to hold until maturity, users gain flexibility, while buyers can acquire yield-bearing positions at a discount. This creates a secondary market for time itself, turning illiquid locked positions into tradable assets.

Market pain points addressed include: 1) Locked assets cannot be used or transferred, creating opportunity costs; 2) Existing veToken models often require long lock-ups with no exit mechanism; 3) Users need a way to price and trade time-based value.

In the past six months (March to September 2026), Hourglass has focused on expanding its vault offerings beyond the initial frxETH/ETH Convex pair, improving the order book's depth and user experience, and enhancing documentation for developers. The platform has also emphasized transparency in handling user errors, such as refunding misdirected deposits, which builds trust in its operations.

However, the protocol remains dependent on the performance and security of its underlying yield sources, and the market for TBTs is still nascent. No major negative incidents have been reported in the past two years beyond standard operational challenges.

Hourglass, a time-bound token marketplace, has progressed through several significant milestones since its inception. In May 2023, the project announced a $4.2 million seed funding round led by Electric Capital, with participation from Coinbase Ventures, Circle Ventures, and other investors. This capital injection validated the concept of trading time-bound tokens (TBTs) and provided the foundation for building its core infrastructure.

A key technical milestone was the launch of its Stable pre-deposit campaign, which allowed users to deposit USDC ahead of the platform's full functionality. The first phase established initial liquidity, while the second phase, which concluded in late December, enabled users to claim their deposits and any excess refunds through the Merkl dashboard. This marked the transition from a conceptual framework to a live, user-operated marketplace.

Looking ahead, Hourglass aims to expand beyond stablecoins into other asset classes, leveraging its order book model to offer composable, oracle-driven markets. The project's long-term significance lies in its potential to create a dedicated liquidity layer for time-bound assets, bridging the gap between DeFi's accessibility and CeFi's efficiency.

In the past six months (March–September 2026), Hourglass completed the second phase of its Stable pre-deposit vault. Over 10,000 verified wallets contributed more than $1.1 billion in eligible deposits. The allocation used a pro-rata method with a minimum $1,000 guarantee; amounts above that were distributed at approximately 45%, with the remainder refunded. The official roadmap beyond this phase has not been disclosed.
