About Hats Protocol
Hats Protocol is a roles-as-permissions protocol for DAOs and on-chain organisations that mints positions as grantable, revocable ERC-1155 hats. Each hat binds admins, eligibility modules and a scope of responsibility, and can gate multisig signing, voting, treasury spending, workspaces and channel access, with roles assignable to externally owned accounts, multisigs, contracts or AI agents. The pain point is that DAOs have chat groups but no org chart, permissions are added and removed by hand, access survives departures and accountability cannot be traced.
On 24 June 2026 the team announced the closure of parent company Haberdasher Labs, turning the protocol into a public good: contracts are unchanged, the stack is fully open source and hosted resources remain until year end. The team said the project had not reached the network effects and revenue needed for commercial sustainability, and it now runs on community self-deployment and maintenance.
Hats Protocol's parent Haberdasher Labs announced its shutdown on June 24, 2026, transitioning the protocol into a public good with unchanged smart contracts and a fully open-sourced tech stack maintained by the community.
Future strategy and roadmap: Hats Protocol plans to operate as a public good sustained by community and ecosystem contributors, maintaining contracts and tooling while promoting its role and permission management standard across more DAOs.
