About HOPR
HOPR is a Layer0-based metadata privacy protocol that hides communication metadata—such as sender, receiver, timing, and frequency—through a decentralized mixnet, rather than merely encrypting content. Its core mechanism is "proof-of-relay," which incentivizes nodes to forward data, while probabilistic payment channels enable low-cost, scalable private transmission. It addresses the market pain point that existing privacy tools (e.g., VPN, Tor) suffer from centralization trust risks or performance bottlenecks, and lack economic incentives for nodes; meanwhile, in blockchain transactions and DeFi usage, metadata leakage like IP addresses can lead to identity association or targeted attacks. HOPR allows any user or application (e.g., medical data, energy trading) to obtain strong privacy guarantees in a decentralized manner. In the past six months (February to August 2026), HOPR has continuously optimized network performance, improved client usability, and expanded integrations with ecosystem projects, while community governance and node operation tools have also been iterating. Overall, the project is in steady development, but no large-scale commercial deployment cases have emerged yet.
HOPR, a Layer0 metadata privacy protocol, originated in early 2018 when the core team in Switzerland's Crypto Valley began exploring decentralized solutions for secure direct messaging. After the initial project was cancelled, the team founded HOPR formally at the end of 2018 to tackle network-level metadata privacy.
In 2020, HOPR launched its first incentivized testnet on the Matic network, introducing the Proof-of-Relay (PoR) mechanism. This marked a significant milestone, as it demonstrated a sustainable economic model for privacy-preserving mixnets while attracting over 500 node operators.
The mainnet release, HOPR Node Jungfrau, became the culmination of these efforts, bundling multi-hop routing, payment channels, and the mixnet protocol into a single application. Shortly after, the HOPR Node PC was released as a dedicated hardware device, enabling users to run nodes from home and contributing to network decentralization.
These developments represent the protocol's evolution from concept to a functional infrastructure layer, with the PoR mechanism and hardware node standing out as long-term foundational elements.
Positive in the past six months: On March 27, 2026, HOPR released stable version 3.0.2, featuring multi-architecture binaries and updated load-testing benchmarks, and fixed the auto version-bump failure for this version, laying a foundation for network stability.
Sebastian Bürgel (Founder & CEO): Holds an M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering from ETH Zurich, where he also conducted postdoctoral research. He co-founded HOPR (originally SONECT) in 2017 and currently serves as VP Technology at Gnosis, leading HOPR's protocol development focused on metadata privacy protection.
