About Gravity Bridge
Gravity Bridge is a decentralised bridge connecting Ethereum and the Cosmos ecosystem, with GRAV as its native token. It locks assets on Ethereum and mints representations on Cosmos, with the full validator set jointly signing cross-chain authorisations and validators staking the token to secure the bridge, deliberately avoiding multisig or small node groups. The pain point is that Cosmos assets need reliable bridging into Ethereum, and centralised multisig bridges are single points of failure.
On 30 May 2026 the bridge was attacked and about USD 5.4 million moved out, including USD 4.3 million in USDC, 274 ether worth roughly USD 553,000, USD 434,000 in USDT and 14.164 tokenised gold worth about USD 64,000; the team told validators and orchestrators to halt that day and later confirmed the bridge had stopped. On-chain analysts suspect the contract signing keys leaked, part of the funds moved through swap services and exchanges, and no recovery timeline has been published.
Gravity Bridge is a non-custodial cross-chain bridge in the Cosmos ecosystem, enabling asset transfers between Ethereum and Cosmos. Its key milestones include: in 2021, it launched a long-running testnet with a stable set of 100 validators, validating the bridge's reliability; subsequently, the mainnet went live, implementing a fully non-custodial mechanism for locking and minting assets. In May 2026, the bridge suffered an attack, resulting in the theft of approximately $5.4 million, prompting the team to suspend operations and investigate. This incident highlighted the critical importance of cross-chain bridge security. These events have long-term significance for the bridge's evolution.
Gravity Bridge suffered an attack on May 30, 2026 linked to a suspected signing-key compromise, with about $5.4 million in assets drained (including roughly $4.3 million USDC, 274 WETH, about $434K USDT and 14.164 PAXG). After confirming the incident, the team urgently paused the bridge and asked validators and orchestrators to halt while an investigation proceeds.
In the Gravity Bridge incident, the attacker then moved and laundered part of the funds through ChangeNow, Binance and Tornado Cash; on-chain analysts estimate about 2,102 ETH (roughly $4.23 million) still sits in the attacker's wallet, making recovery difficult.
