Key progress in the past six months: 1) Decided to replace the current consensus with Malachite, a production-grade BFT engine, to address scalability and safety limitations (); 2) Completed the migration from the self-maintained Polkadot SDK fork to upstream stable2409, removing the dependency on a custom fork (); 3) Migrated the protocol sandbox to Wasmtime, significantly simplifying code and improving performance (); 4) Introduced shielded transactions for vara.eth ().
Future focus: The team will prioritize integrating Malachite as the consensus engine, replacing the current implementation; meanwhile, they plan to migrate to Nix Flakes for reproducible, composable and more cache-efficient developer environments ().
Nikolay Volf, Co-founder & CEO, was a core developer at Parity Technologies, contributing to Substrate and pioneering WebAssembly smart contracts. He founded Gear in 2021.
