Foundation Devices is a Bitcoin-focused hardware company. Its main product is Passport, a hardware wallet that stores Bitcoin private keys offline. The company also develops KeyOS, an open-source operating system for hardware devices, which supports not only Bitcoin transactions but also identity verification and AI agent authorization.

Its core competitiveness lies in open-source code, dedicated security hardware, and a self-custody philosophy. Passport Prime, the latest device, combines a Bitcoin wallet, FIDO security key, 2FA storage, and encrypted file storage. KeyOS runs apps in isolated sandboxes and uses a dedicated chip for Bluetooth communication, aiming to protect users' digital lives beyond just crypto assets.

The market pain point is that traditional hardware wallets only sign transactions, while software-based security tools are vulnerable to malware and phishing. As AI agents gain ability to move funds and access accounts, users need a trusted device to approve actions. Foundation positions its hardware as a "human authorization layer" for high-risk operations.

In the past six months (Feb-Aug 2026), Foundation launched Passport Prime, opened the KeyOS developer platform, and announced an app store planned for Q2. Cake Wallet was the first third-party app on KeyOS. However, in August, the company warned users about phishing emails impersonating Foundation, following a Coldcard wallet vulnerability that led to significant Bitcoin theft. Foundation urged users to never share recovery phrases or download unknown software.
