About ETHBEAT

L2BEAT is an independent data and analytics platform for Ethereum layer 2s and cross-chain bridges, letting researchers, developers, funds and general users compare trust assumptions on one footing. Each rollup is sorted into a Stage 0 to Stage 2 maturity scale, with item-by-item disclosure of whether proofs are live, how upgrade multisigs and security councils are composed, and whether withdrawal delays and forced-transaction escape hatches exist, while risk rosettes break down who controls the sequencer, state validation and data availability; TVS and UOPS measure value locked in contracts and operations per unit time, so structurally different rollups sit side by side.

The trade-off is that grading relies on self-disclosure, the Stage scale does not cover sequencer centralisation, a gap shared across the category, and TVS reflects locked value rather than whether users can exit; for readers who skip the detail, the labels are easily read as a safety endorsement.

Since its founding in 2020, L2BEAT has monitored L2 contracts and upgrades. In June 2023, inspired by Vitalik Buterin's proposal, it introduced the Stages framework, grading rollups from Stage 0 to 2 to measure decentralization and trust minimization, which became an industry benchmark. In October 2024, it released an updated Data Availability risk framework, distinguishing risks between DA layer security and DA bridge security, and refining economic security, fraud detection, committee composition, and upgradeability dimensions. In 2025, it further revised project categorization, requiring L2 classification to include a proof system and moving non-compliant projects into an "Others" category, pushing the ecosystem to improve trust-assumption transparency. These milestones have had a lasting impact on L2 risk perception and security practices.

In 2026, L2BEAT added an Interop section covering 26 chains, 43 protocols and 190 active routes, with about $1.47 billion in 24-hour cross-chain volume, and launched a Privacy adversaries view that grades how well each privacy protocol protects against specific counterparties.

On July 22 L2BEAT published Security Councils in Practice, comparing how the councils at Arbitrum, Optimism, Celo, Taiko and Scroll operate; on July 2 it compared Hyperliquid and Lighter on control over collateral, orders and positions; and a May 22 report found Lighter the only active exchange with an end-to-end verified exit path. Site data show about $33.6 billion secured by rollups, up 35.8% year on year, with roughly 40 project changes handled each week.

Future strategy and roadmap: L2BEAT added the Interop section in 2026, covering 26 chains, 43 protocols, and 190 active routes, and launched the Privacy adversaries view that assesses real protection of privacy protocols by adversary. Next it will keep maintaining the Stage 0, 1, 2 grading and advance standardization of native Rollups and the ZK directory, with proposals pointing to EIP-8288 and EIP-8357. The team plans to widen the interoperability risk framework, tagging cross-chain message security assumptions and exit paths one by one. The priority is making Rollup security ratings a citable benchmark for regulation and capital allocation.
