About Common Ground
Common Ground is a Web3-native messaging and voice chat platform designed as an open-source alternative to Discord. Its core business centers on community communication tools—chats, voice/video calls, live streams, forums, and events—integrated with blockchain features like token-gated channels and on-chain governance. The platform emphasizes user ownership and decentralization, allowing communities to self-host instances while staying connected to a broader network.
Its key narrative is democratizing digital social spaces by removing reliance on centralized tech giants. The platform solves pain points such as data control, arbitrary moderation, and lack of community sovereignty. By supporting multiple EVM chains and token-based access, it enables crypto-native communities to manage membership and incentives directly.
In the past six months (March to September 2026), Common Ground has focused on open-sourcing its codebase under AGPLv3, releasing plugins like a WebAssembly version of Luanti (Minetest) and Sauerbraten for in-browser gaming, plus utility tools for airdrops and forums. Development has prioritized the plugin ecosystem and P2P hosting capabilities. However, the platform remains in early stages—many features are still experimental, and the user base is limited compared to mainstream competitors. No major negative incidents were reported, but scalability and user adoption remain significant challenges.
Key progress in the past six months (2026-03-07 to 2026-09-07):
- In July 2026, the bot template merged support for mention and reply invocations, enhancing interaction capabilities.
- The platform continued advancing its open-source plan under the AGPLv3 license.
- Multi-chain support expanded to 16+ chains.
Official future focus and roadmap:
- Open-sourcing all app.cg code.
- Developing a plugin system for dApps and game integrations.
- Advancing the $CG token economy, where holders can generate Spark to unlock premium features.
- Offering grants and bounties to incentivize builders.
- Achieving decentralized governance.
