About Ceramic Network
Ceramic is a composable data network that gives applications a verifiable shared database built on event streams. It targets data locked inside individual apps: social graphs, reputation and content sit in private databases, and switching apps means starting over. Ceramic wraps every write in a signed commit; a stream can carry parallel histories that nodes merge deterministically, writes need no gas, and global ordering comes from an anchor service that writes the Merkle root of batched commits to an EVM chain.
Developers define schemas in ComposeDB and query them directly; models are immutable, permissions are controlled by decentralised identifiers, and apps can only write during a user-authorised window. Unlike putting data wholly onchain, only the root hash goes onchain while payloads stay with nodes. Each stream must be kept by nodes, and anchor frequency and cost fall on the deployer, with self-anchoring requiring its own contract and funded account.
Ceramic Network launched its mainnet in 2021, introducing a composable data network for managing verifiable data at scale. In 2025, Textile and 3Box Labs merged to focus on AI agents, with Ceramic becoming part of the new 'intelligence layer' for the multi-agent economy. These milestones mark Ceramic's evolution from a decentralized data infrastructure to a foundational component for AI-driven data exchange.
In 2026 Ceramic's maintenance effort moved to ceramic-one: the Rust implementation ships independently under an MIT licence, supports the Recon protocol for reliable sync and historical replay between nodes, and still reads all data written during the ComposeDB era. Alongside it, js-ceramic and ComposeDB were formally deprecated with migration urged, and the anchoring service shuts down at least a month after Recall's mainnet launch, breaking apps that stay on the old components.
Organisationally, after parent 3Box Labs merged with Textile, the team's attention went to Recall, a cryptoeconomic platform where AI agents prove, improve and earn from their intelligence, leaving Ceramic as a data component rather than a standalone line. The remaining work is self-anchoring ceramic-one to Recall, replacing dependence on a centralised CAS and Ethereum with decentralised timestamps, followed by automated conflict resolution to reach a feature-complete MVP. Apps such as Gitcoin Passport still rely on its verifiable data streams.
Ceramic Network's Future strategy and roadmap: keep ceramic-one stable and forkable, finish self-anchoring and conflict resolution, and see legacy applications through migration.
