About Cabin
Cabin began in 2021 as Creator Cabins and grew into a network-city project that links scattered coliving communities through citizenship NFTs and the CABIN token, with remote workers and creators as its main participants. It addresses costly urban housing and thin neighbourly ties: a property qualifies as a neighbourhood once it gathers 1,000 CABIN votes, each site keeps its own title and rules, and citizens vote on admissions and treasury spending.
In practice Cabin works as a community-incubation method: a neighbourhood accelerator turns friend groups into physical settlements, a city directory indexes members and properties, and citizenship doubles as membership proof and voting weight. In 2025 the community voted to dissolve the formal DAO and distribute the treasury to token holders; the neighbourhoods moved to independent operation and coordination passed to the individual settlements and the spun-out Neighborhood Village Project.
As of June 2026 Cabin's network still spans more than 20 coliving neighborhoods across North America, Europe, Latin America and Asia, but the formal DAO was wound down by community vote in 2025, with the treasury distributed to token holders. Neighborhoods continued as independently operated hubs, and the Neighborhood Village Project carried on the accelerator methodology as a spinout.
In 2026 Cabin functions more as a brand and toolkit: the city directory, community stories and in-person gatherings are still updated, and the CABIN token persists on Ethereum as a historical governance artifact rather than a lever for protocol decisions. Operations moved from the grand network-city narrative back to recruiting specific communities, site partnerships and co-creation events, at a smaller scale than early promotion suggested.The CABIN token remains transferable on Ethereum but is thinly traded and functions mainly as a membership artifact, while governance has shifted to autonomy for each hub plus quarterly in-person gatherings, with operators reaching decisions by consensus.
Cabin's team and community are concentrating resources on a repeatable neighborhood incubation process, using courses, toolkits and cross-community events to lower the barrier to founding new coliving projects, and keeping onchain records for membership and contribution credentials rather than treasury governance.
Jon Hillis — Co-founder; former Director of Product at Instacart, founded Cabin in 2021, moved to independent community operations after the DAO wound down in 2025.
