About Augur
Augur is a decentralized oracle and prediction market protocol built on Ethereum. Its core business has shifted from retail-facing prediction markets to a B2B oracle service: other DeFi protocols, cross-chain bridges, and third-party prediction platforms pay fees to use Augur's dispute resolution mechanism for settling real-world events.
Its core competitive advantage is an economically incentivized dispute process. Anyone can challenge a reported outcome by staking REP tokens; challengers must stake roughly double the previous amount, and the losing side forfeits their stake to the winners. If disputes escalate to a critical threshold (~275,000 REP, about 2.5% of supply), the protocol triggers a fork: REP splits into outcome-specific tokens, and holders must migrate their tokens to the universe they believe reflects reality. The Augur Lituus design raises the cost of oracle manipulation to approximately 134% of fully diluted valuation, up from 92% under v2.
The market pain point it addresses: most oracle systems rely on companies, committees, token votes, or multisigs, which are centralized points of failure. Augur replaces trust with an open economic game where defending the true outcome is profitable.
In the past six months (2026-03-13 to 2026-09-13): The "Moon Fork" was triggered on April 8 around a deliberately escalated dispute about the Artemis II launch. A 60-day migration window opened, requiring all REP holders to migrate 1:1 to a chosen outcome universe by August 1. Migration was one-way and irreversible; unmigrated REP became permanently frozen and economically worthless. Kraken confirmed exchange support; other exchanges remained unconfirmed. The fork served as the first live stress test of a decentralized oracle's last-resort mechanism with real value at stake. Lituus Foundation also funded Dark Florist, an independent team researching the same problem. Negative: REP holders who missed the deadline lost everything with no grace period; some exchange-custodied REP may be trapped if the exchange did not support migration; REP price remains far below historical highs.
Founded in 2014 by Jack Peterson, Joey Krug and Jeremy Gardner, Augur was the first decentralized prediction market on Ethereum, raising ~$5.5M in its 2015 ICO. Augur v1 launched on mainnet in July 2018, introducing the REP token staking mechanism for dispute resolution. Augur v2 deployed on July 28, 2020, migrating to DAI-denominated markets with 24-hour settlement and REPv2. In 2025, the Lituus Foundation took over development, repositioning Augur as a cross-chain oracle service rather than a retail prediction market. The Augur Lituus whitepaper was released on January 29, 2026, proposing a migration-based fork design with supply recovery. On April 9, 2026, the first algorithmic fork was triggered, opening a 60-day migration window that completed with the Moon Fork in August 2026. This fork validated Augur's oracle mechanism end-to-end, marking its transition from a consumer platform to B2B oracle infrastructure.
