About Argus

Argus is a decentralized gaming infrastructure project centered on World Engine, a sharded Layer 2 blockchain SDK designed specifically for fully on-chain games. Its core business includes building the World Engine stack, developing the Cardinal game shard (an ECS-based, high-tick-rate execution layer written in Go), and offering an EVM-compatible base shard for composability with Ethereum tools.

Core strengths: horizontal scalability via game shards, high throughput for both reads and writes, self-indexing to avoid external indexers, and a plug-in system for parallelized ZK verification. This addresses market pain points where existing blockchains lack game-loop automation, have low tick rates, force Solidity complexity, and rely on fragile "band-aid" infrastructure.

In the past six months (March–September 2026), Argus has continued to advance the World Engine ecosystem, focusing on developer tooling and interoperability between shards. Public information shows ongoing refinement of Cardinal and the shard router, with emphasis on reducing hardware requirements for node operators. No major negative events beyond typical development challenges have been reported in reliable sources.

In 2020, the Argus team created Dark Forest, the first fully onchain MMORTS game, proving the feasibility of putting game state and rules entirely onchain while exposing the inability of existing blockchains to handle high-throughput game computation.

In 2023, Argus launched World Engine, a Layer 2 sharded rollup SDK purpose-built for onchain games. Its sharding architecture includes the Cardinal game shard (ECS-based, for real-time combat and physics) and the Polaris EVM shard (for smart contracts and interoperability), with a shard router preserving composability and avoiding state fragmentation.

In December 2023, World Engine powered the Dark Frontier gamechain, achieving thousands of TPS and sub-100ms block times, demonstrating its capacity for large-scale onchain games. World Engine was later open-sourced, enabling developers to launch their own gamechains quickly, laying shared infrastructure for the Internet of Games.

In the past six months, Argus Labs has continued to advance World Engine development, with its flagship game Dark Frontier already live and processing over 700,000 player transactions. The company completed a $10 million seed round led by Haun Ventures, with angel investors including Elad Gil and Balaji Srinivasan. The team is hiring a Game Design Lead to strengthen game development capabilities. Official future focuses include: continuing to optimize World Engine's sharding architecture for better game performance; expanding the World Engine ecosystem to support more game developers; advancing Dark Frontier's official launch and content updates; and exploring cross-game economic interoperability. The roadmap shows World Engine serving as shared infrastructure for the Internet of Games, enabling game world interoperability.

Scott Sunarto (Founder & CEO). Previously withdrew from college to work at a crypto exchange in Asia, then studied EECS at UC Berkeley and graduated early. Contributed to Dark Forest, the first fully onchain MMORTS game, and built infrastructure for Ethereum restaking (EigenLayer), parallelized EVM (Monad), zkVM (Succinct), rollup-as-a-service (Conduit), and blockchain SDKs (Commonware).
