About Across Protocol
Across Protocol is an intent-based cross-chain bridge. Users specify the desired output token and amount on the destination chain, and relayers front the funds, with settlement verified through an optimistic mechanism. This eliminates the need to wait for source-chain finality, delivering fills in roughly 2 seconds across 20+ chains.
The core value proposition is speed and simplicity. Traditional bridges require users to lock assets, wait for block confirmations, and then swap on the destination, often involving multiple steps and gas on two chains. Across compresses this into a single signed transaction. It also supports crosschain swaps and embedded actions (e.g., depositing the bridged asset into a lending protocol) via the Swap API and MulticallHandler, enabling use cases like one-click position entry from any chain.
In the past six months, Across has focused on expanding its intents system to phase 3 (swap + execution) and improving the developer experience around its API. A notable governance development was the proposal to transition from a DAO to a Delaware C-Corporation, citing legal and operational friction in the DAO structure. The founder also publicly discussed the token being undervalued and the challenges of token-based incentives, while noting future plans to potentially tokenize equity in phases. No user funds have been lost since inception.
Across Protocol, an optimistic-based cross-chain bridge, has evolved through several pivotal milestones. It secured $41M in a token round led by Paradigm, with participation from Coinbase Ventures and Multicoin Capital. The protocol co-authored ERC-7683, an intent-based cross-chain standard later adopted by Optimism, cementing its influence in interoperability design. ACX listings on Coinbase and Binance expanded market access. Security challenges emerged, including a disclosed token contract vulnerability by LayerZero's CEO and a reported Solana attack that left user funds unharmed, both testing and validating its resilient architecture. The most transformative proposal involves dissolving the DAO to transition into a US C Corporation, offering token holders equity conversion or a USDC exit at a 25% premium, reflecting a strategic pivot toward institutional engagement. These events mark a trajectory from technical innovation to market integration and structural governance evolution.
Major progress for Across Protocol over the past six months:
V4 architecture launched: based on UMA optimistic verification and Succinct SP1 zkVM to generate Ethereum state proofs, enabling fast onboarding of new chains via a universal verifier. Integration time dropped from weeks to hours; BNB Smart Chain is supported and any ERC-20 can be bridged by default.
Robinhood Chain bridge launched: USDC from 13 chains is converted to Paxos-issued USDG on Robinhood Chain, with fills in about two seconds. Paxos Transit integration supports stablecoin conversions up to $50 million per transfer at locked rates with no slippage.
Production-grade AI agent stack: Swap API, Skills CLI, MCP Server, ERC-7683 support, and MulticallHandler for atomic cross-chain actions; Across expects most cross-chain volume to be initiated by software by 2027.
Security incident: On July 17, the Solana deployment suffered its first attack. User funds were safe and all bridge transactions completed; only Risk Labs' relayer capital was potentially lost. Solana deposits were temporarily disabled.
Future focus: expand to more chains and assets, deepen Transit deployment; advance Across Prime and deeper relayer incentives; optimize routing strategies for speed, cost, and liquidity; improve cross-chain UX and token support; strengthen agent-native infrastructure.
