About 21Shares
21Shares is a Swiss-based issuer of cryptocurrency exchange-traded products (ETPs), offering both single-asset products (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum) and diversified index products. Its core value proposition lies in combining regulatory compliance with physical backing—each ETP is fully backed by the underlying crypto assets, providing investors with a regulated, familiar vehicle to gain exposure to digital assets without directly holding them.
The market pain point 21Shares addresses is the operational and regulatory gap between traditional finance and the crypto market. While blockchain solves transaction throughput, institutional adoption is hindered by legacy systems for settlement, compliance, and reporting. 21Shares bridges this by issuing products on traditional exchanges, with custody and transparency standards that meet institutional expectations.
Over the past six months (Feb–Aug 2026), 21Shares has made several notable moves. In late August, it renamed two US-listed funds to include "Staking" (e.g., 21Shares Ethereum ETF → 21Shares Ethereum Staking ETF), reflecting the addition of staking rewards. It also switched the pricing benchmark for five US funds from CME CF indices to FTSE indices, aiming for broader data coverage. Additionally, the firm released its mid-year crypto market report, highlighting that while global ETP AUM dipped 15% to $140 billion, net BTC holdings remained resilient at 1.25 million coins. Co-founder Ophelia Snyder publicly cautioned that tokenization hype is outrunning Wall Street's operational readiness, noting that major infrastructure for post-trade processing, compliance workflows, and risk management is not yet prepared for institution-scale adoption. She emphasized that the industry's biggest challenge is scale, not functionality—a $1 billion transaction is trivial in traditional finance, but moving large volumes of digital bearer assets requires far more oversight than existing bookkeeping systems provide.
Over the past six months, 21Shares completed a global benchmark framework upgrade: from March 26, core European and Australian ETPs (BTC/ETH/SOL etc.) transitioned to FTSE Russell digital asset indices, and on August 27 US single-asset ETFs followed, establishing unified cross-regional pricing and governance while preserving unbroken historical performance and NAV track records.
On the product side, on August 27 five US ETFs were renamed as "Staking ETFs" (TETH, TSOL, TDOT, TSUI, THYP), highlighting embedded staking yields (0.80%-4.45%) and emphasizing a multi-validator open architecture with five years of staking operational experience.
On May 14, 21Shares launched TKNS, its first actively managed crypto ETF, allocating at least 80% of assets to crypto assets and dynamically adjusting exposures using market cycles, valuation metrics, and on-chain indicators—marking a shift from passive indexing to active strategies.
Official future focus: continue using FTSE Russell as the global benchmark to ensure institutional pricing integrity; deepen active management and staking yield products; expand multi-asset and cycle-aware strategies; maintain an open external-validator architecture to reduce single points of failure.
