Ethereum Foundation researcher: Glamsterdam testnet upgrade delayed, EIP-8037 causes contract compatibility issues
Due to the ChainSecurity report revealing compatibility and security issues with EIP-8037 and certain smart contracts, core developers decided last week to postpone the Hoodi testnet upgrade to Glamsterdam. The issues identified so far include: the remaining Gas during transaction execution may increase, leading to underflow in some Gas counting logic and triggering rollbacks, or causing code paths that should not be executed to be triggered, making the transaction appear successful. Additionally, some contracts may underestimate usage due to the inability to correctly calculate Gas consumption during calls.
ChainSecurity previously stated that 13 real cases have been identified and they are responsibly disclosing this information to the affected projects. Toni Wahrstätter mentioned that this week they will further investigate the relevant contracts and assess subsequent solutions, which may require collaboration among application developers, core developers, auditors, and node operators. In the worst-case scenario, adjustments to the protocol specifications may be necessary. He reminded application developers and auditors to check the compatibility of contracts with EIP-8037 and EIP-8038 and to report issues in a timely manner.
