About Kalshi

Kalshi is a U.S. CFTC-regulated Designated Contract Market (DCM) offering binary event contracts on outcomes such as sports, elections, and economic data, using a central limit order book and fully collateralized settlement. It tries to bring prediction markets inside the federal derivatives framework, offering a more compliant alternative to offshore crypto prediction platforms and state-level sportsbooks: users aged 18 and older can participate, and there are clear contract rules, price discovery, and dispute resolution processes. The core pain point it addresses is that event trading has long operated in a regulatory gray area, with users lacking protection for funds and market integrity.

In the past six months (March to September 2026), Kalshi's sports-related trading volume expanded further, but it also became entangled in enforcement conflicts with multiple U.S. states. Connecticut, Arizona, Michigan, and others sued or brought criminal charges alleging it operates illegal sports gambling in disguise; a Washington state court ordered it to stop offering prediction markets for sports and other categories, and a Michigan court issued a temporary restraining order with substantial daily fines. The CFTC has strongly asserted exclusive jurisdiction over DCMs, sued some states, and advanced proposed rules for event contracts. Overall, the business is growing rapidly amid regulatory battles, but legal uncertainty remains significant.

Kalshi filed Form D after selling roughly $1.12 billion in equity, underscoring major capital raises. Following CFTC scrutiny it withdrew sports contracts to maintain regulatory compliance. It introduced perpetual contracts priced via Pyth Network, expanded into copper, and surpassed $5.5 billion in volume while planning further asset-class growth. Revenue milestones exceeded $2 billion then $4 billion, with IPO banker outreach and $40 billion valuation talks. Blanket, an AI hedging tool for small businesses, was launched to broaden risk-management offerings.

Over the past six months (2026-03-04 to 2026-09-04), Kalshi has made significant strides. In May 2026, it launched perpetual futures, becoming the first CFTC-regulated exchange in the U.S. to offer such products, enabling investors to trade crypto price directions without expiry dates. This expands its product line beyond event contracts. Additionally, Kalshi introduced the Public Companies Hub, a centralized platform for corporate earnings prediction markets, covering KPI forecasts, mention markets, and historical data, attracting Wall Street interest. The company also partnered with ARK Invest to integrate prediction market signals into institutional research and risk management, marking a shift toward professional adoption. Looking ahead, Kalshi's roadmap focuses on expanding asset classes (e.g., more currencies and commodities), enhancing institutional infrastructure, and potentially introducing leverage while maintaining regulatory compliance. The company aims to evolve from a retail prediction market into a full-fledged derivatives exchange, with a vision to price everything for better decision-making.
