About Braavos

Braavos is a smart-contract wallet built specifically for Starknet, available as a browser extension and mobile app. Unlike traditional wallets that rely on a single private key, Braavos uses account abstraction to make the account itself a programmable contract. This enables security features such as 2FA/3FA, daily spending limits, multi-owner accounts, and biometric hardware signing at the protocol level. Since 2025, it has added native Bitcoin support, including BTC holding and Lightning payments, and allows users to earn yield on BTC through Starknet DeFi protocols without bridging or wrapping.

Its core value proposition is combining self-custody with institutional-grade security. The wallet has deployed over 1 million accounts since early 2022 with no critical exploits. The DeFi dashboard aggregates staking, lending, and liquidity provision across Starknet protocols like zkLend, Nostra, and mySwap, all from one interface.

Market pain points addressed include private key vulnerability, lack of transaction protection against phishing, and fragmented cross-chain asset management. Braavos solves these by offering multi-factor signing, spending caps, and unified BTC and Starknet asset management.

In the past six months (2026-02-28 to 2026-08-29), Braavos released version 4.19.6 in February 2026, focusing on UI improvements and deeper DeFi integrations. It continued expanding Bitcoin features, including Lightning payment refinements and enhanced BTC yield routes. The team also improved the Ledger hardware wallet integration and optimized gas costs for smart-contract transactions.

Negative aspects within two years: Starknet's ecosystem remains small compared to Ethereum mainnet, limiting dApp choices and liquidity. Parts of the app code are closed-source, which may concern users seeking full transparency. Smart-contract wallets also incur slightly higher gas costs than EOA wallets, though this is minimal on Starknet.

Braavos, a self-custodial wallet on StarkNet, originated from the team's first project mySwap, a DeFi DEX launched on StarkNet testnet in early 2022. Recognizing the need for better user experience, the team pivoted to build Braavos in March 2022, focusing on account abstraction. Key milestones include: launching the browser extension wallet on all major browsers, becoming the first StarkNet mobile wallet on Android and iOS, introducing multi-owner accounts (multi-sig) for team treasury management, and implementing a hardware signer feature that combines hardware-level security with Web2-like convenience (e.g., Face ID signing). The wallet also pioneered native 2FA and social recovery, eliminating seed phrase vulnerabilities. These innovations laid the foundation for StarkNet's account abstraction ecosystem, making Braavos a reference implementation for secure and user-friendly smart contract wallets.
